How does 'Dutton Ranch' address John Dutton’s death in 'Yellowstone'?
'Dutton Ranch' revisits John Dutton’s death as Beth and Rip struggle with life after 'Yellowstone' events

The new Yellowstone spinoff Dutton Ranch continues to explore the emotional aftermath of John Dutton’s death, keeping Kevin Costner’s iconic character central to the story despite his exit from the franchise.
In the opening episodes of the Paramount+ series, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler relocate to Texas in an attempt to start over following the violent events of Yellowstone’s final season. However, conversations throughout the series make it clear that John’s presence still heavily shapes their lives.
Beth openly reflects on her father’s struggles and sacrifices while discussing how much she misses him. Rip also reassures her that they brought “the best parts” of John with them as they begin building a future away from Montana.
The series further highlights John Dutton’s lasting reputation through new characters introduced in Texas. Ranch owner Jeanie Edwards references hearing about John through his public legacy, while rival rancher Beulah Jackson is shown researching news surrounding his death.
John Dutton was killed during the final season of Yellowstone after being targeted by a hitman in a storyline tied to Jamie Dutton. Beth later took revenge against Jamie, with Rip helping cover up the murder before the couple left Montana behind.
According to comments made by executive producer Christina Alexandra Voros to Page Six, Dutton Ranch will feature a more mature but increasingly dangerous version of Beth as she and Rip attempt to find peace while facing new threats in Texas.
Created by Taylor Sheridan, Dutton Ranch expands the Yellowstone universe while continuing to honour John Dutton’s influence on the Dutton family legacy.
