Steve Coogan reveals why Mike White chose him for ‘The White Lotus’ season four replacing Helena Bonham Carter
The actor said filming in the south of France has been highly collaborative and creatively freeing for him

Steve Coogan has opened up about joining the cast of The White Lotus season four, revealing that creator Mike White personally connected with his cult British film work long before casting him in HBO’s hugely successful drama.
Speaking on the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet, Coogan explained that White had admired some of his earlier projects, including Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People and Jim Jarmusch’s Coffee and Cigarettes. According to the actor, that shared appreciation for offbeat storytelling helped pave the way for his arrival in the sharply satirical series.
Coogan said he had also been a longtime admirer of White’s work dating back to the 2000 indie film Chuck & Buck. After watching all three seasons of The White Lotus, he hoped an opportunity to collaborate might eventually happen.
Now filming in the south of France for the upcoming fourth season, Coogan described the experience as creatively satisfying and surprisingly relaxed. He praised White’s collaborative approach on set, saying the filmmaker encourages actors to improvise and shape scenes naturally rather than rigidly sticking to scripts.
The actor added that he felt instantly comfortable within the world of The White Lotus, which has become known for mixing dark comedy, uncomfortable social satire and explosive character drama. Each season of the HBO hit follows wealthy guests at luxury resorts as personal tensions slowly spiral into chaos.
Coogan’s comments also reignited attention around the sudden departure of Helena Bonham Carter from the production earlier this year. Reports previously suggested the actress exited the series roughly one week into filming, sparking widespread speculation online about behind the scenes tensions.
Addressing the situation publicly for the first time, Coogan insisted the decision came down to creative changes rather than scandal. He explained that the production realised the character dynamics and wider story were not functioning the way the team originally intended.
According to Coogan, the role was ultimately rebuilt entirely from the ground up. “The whole part was rewritten from scratch,” he said, suggesting the production underwent significant restructuring after Bonham Carter’s exit.
HBO had earlier confirmed that White and Bonham Carter “did not align once on set,” while also stressing that the split was amicable. The network stated at the time that producers remained huge admirers of the actress and hoped to work with her again in future.
Laura Dern was later announced as Bonham Carter’s replacement, instantly fuelling further excitement around season four. The Oscar winning actress joins a franchise that has already become one of HBO’s biggest prestige television successes of the decade.
Fans online have reacted strongly to Coogan’s latest comments, with many praising HBO for extensively reworking the season rather than forcing a storyline that was not functioning properly. Others have become even more curious about what exactly changed behind the scenes during the early stages of filming.
With production continuing in France and secrecy surrounding plot details remaining tight, The White Lotus season four is already shaping up to be one of the most heavily anticipated television releases of the coming year.
