Punjab Ombudsperson Dr Najma Afzal Khan has said that codes of conduct and inquiry committees are being ensured in institutions where women work, adding that the ombudsperson's office is providing immediate relief to women.
Out of 1,400 cases, 1,305 have been decided and punishments have been awarded to those found guilty. She said incidents of exploitation of women have significantly decreased due to the institution's active role, adding that men who face harassment can also approach the ombudsperson.
Addressing a press conference in Rawalpindi, Dr Najma Afzal Khan said that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's vision is to protect women's rights so that they can work in a safe and conducive environment. She said both men and women can approach the institution against harassment. She added that government institutions have extended strong cooperation, resulting in immediate relief for women. Harassment committees are being formed in every institution, each comprising three members, who are also trained.
Dr Najma Afzal said that displaying the code of conduct at workplaces is mandatory, and the institution is responsible for checking compliance. Action is taken against those responsible under the code of conduct and committee findings.
She said harassment is not only a local but a global issue and must be prevented, adding that the institution stands with complainants in case of incidents.
