The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has officially reclassified both the emperor penguin and the Antarctic fur seal as Endangered, citing accelerating impacts of climate change on Antarctic ecosystems.

The updated assessment confirms that the emperor penguin has moved from Near Threatened to Endangered, while the Antarctic fur seal has been shifted from Least Concern to Endangered, reflecting significant long-term population declines driven by warming oceans and shrinking sea ice.

According to the IUCN, emperor penguins are increasingly threatened by the rapid loss of sea ice, which is essential for breeding, chick development, and moulting. As temperatures rise, early ice break-up is causing colonies to collapse, leading to chick deaths and long-term population instability.

Scientists estimate that emperor penguin populations have already declined in parts of Antarctica, with projections suggesting they could fall by half by the end of the century if current climate trends continue.

The Antarctic fur seal is facing a different but related crisis. Rising ocean temperatures are disrupting krill populations, the seals’ primary food source, forcing them into deeper waters and reducing feeding success, which has contributed to steep population declines of more than 50% since 1999.

Environmental experts have described the findings as a stark warning about the wider consequences of global heating on polar biodiversity, where even small shifts in sea ice and ocean temperature can rapidly destabilize entire ecosystems.

The IUCN says the updated classifications underscore the urgency of global climate action, warning that continued emissions and habitat loss could push both species closer to extinction in the coming decades.
