Ryan Gosling’s favorite Rocky line in Project Hail Mary was completely improvised
The now-iconic line came from a spontaneous moment that almost didn’t make the cut

Project Hail Mary has become one of 2026’s biggest surprises, with Ryan Gosling earning praise for his role as Ryland Grace. But it’s his bond with Rocky, the film’s alien companion, that has truly resonated with audiences.
According to Gosling, one of their most memorable moments wasn’t even scripted.
During an interview, he revealed that the line “Rocky hate Mark” came from an improvised exchange on set. While filming a scene about Grace’s past relationship, Gosling casually added that his ex had moved on with someone named Mark.

That’s when James Ortiz, who performs and voices Rocky, instantly replied in character—creating a moment that made it into the final cut.
The scene appears during a quiet conversation between Grace and Rocky about life back home. When Grace mentions his ex, Rocky’s immediate response becomes both comedic and oddly heartfelt, highlighting his loyalty.
The line also carries a personal touch. Gosling later shared that “Mark” was a nod to his longtime collaborator, Mark Avery, who was standing just off-camera at the time.
Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller encouraged improvisation during filming, helping shape the natural chemistry between the two characters.
Project Hail Mary is currently playing in theaters, with fans now spotting the improvised line that became one of its most charming moments.
