‘The Danish Girl’, David Ebershoff’s acclaimed novel and the basis for the 2015 film starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, is being adapted into a stage musical, according to producer George Strus. The new production will explore the life and legacy of Lili Elbe, one of the earliest public figures to undergo gender affirmation surgery, and her wife, Gerda Wegener.

The musical will feature book and lyrics by Nora Brigid Monahan, an original score by Alex Parker and direction by Georgie Rankcom. The first private workshop is set to take place this week, marking the initial step toward a full production. Strus emphasised that the musical will be guided by a majority-trans creative team to ensure authentic representation.

The Danish Girl tells a story that remains vital nearly a century later,” Strus said. “Through music and theatre, we hope to deepen understanding and empathy for the queer experience while honouring Lili and Gerda’s legacy.” The narrative centres on a contemporary art gallery visitor reflecting on the life of the two trailblazers, examining themes of love, identity, and the social impact of their pioneering choices.

The original novel, published in 2000, was a bestseller and is credited with advancing queer literature. Tom Hooper directed the 2015 film adaptation, with a screenplay by Lucinda Coxon. The movie earned four Academy Award nominations, with Vikander winning Best Supporting Actress. The upcoming musical aims to carry forward the cultural and historical significance of the story while offering audiences a fresh, live theatrical perspective.

Benson Drive Productions, led by Strus, is producing the musical. The company has a track record in both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, including titles such as Bigfoot!, Oh, Mary! and Romeo + Juliet. Further details about the musical’s official premiere and cast are expected to be announced later this year, generating anticipation for a production that blends history, heart and contemporary relevance for theatre audiences worldwide.
