Jay-Z has shared a rare and wide ranging set of comments addressing the high profile feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, describing aspects of the conflict as excessive and concerning.

Speaking in an extensive interview with GQ, the rapper and entrepreneur reflected on the evolution of rap battles and how the dynamic has shifted in the current era. While acknowledging that competition has always been a core part of hip hop, he suggested that recent developments have pushed beyond acceptable limits.

“It’s too far. It’s bringing people’s kids in it. I don’t like that,” he said, expressing discomfort with the personal nature of the exchanges. He added that while lyrical sparring has historically been part of the culture, the involvement of family members marks a significant departure from earlier boundaries.

Jay Z framed his comments within a broader discussion about the foundations of hip hop, outlining how elements such as DJing and breakdancing have faded from prominence while battling remains one of the last dominant pillars. However, he questioned whether that aspect still serves a constructive role in the current climate.

He noted that social media has intensified the impact of such conflicts, turning what was once contained within music into wider personal attacks. According to him, the digital environment has made it harder for disputes to remain focused on artistry, instead amplifying hostility and prolonging fallout.

Despite his critique, Jay Z stopped short of fully dismissing rap battles, instead emphasising that his perspective comes from experience. He referenced his own past rivalry with Nas, acknowledging that his views have evolved over time. He admitted that growth has influenced how he now interprets those moments, particularly when considering their wider consequences.

In the same interview, Jay Z also addressed a separate personal matter, discussing a sexual assault lawsuit he chose to contest rather than settle. He described the situation as deeply difficult, stating that the allegations had a significant emotional impact on him and his family.

“I can’t take a settlement. It ain’t in my DNA,” he said, explaining that resolving the case privately was never an option for him. He added that maintaining his position was essential despite the potential personal and financial costs.
