13 sibling pairs who have been nominated or won Oscars, from the Gyllenhaals to the Fondas
Several siblings have earned Academy Award nominations and wins, sometimes even competing in the same categories

The Academy Awards have long celebrated individual excellence in filmmaking, but in some rare cases, the spotlight has also been shared within families. Over the years, several sibling pairs have both received Oscar nominations, proving that talent can run in the family.
Among the most famous modern examples are Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell. The brother-sister duo has won multiple Academy Awards for Best Original Song, including for “No Time to Die” and “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie, making Eilish the youngest two-time Oscar winner. The siblings frequently collaborate, with Finneas co-writing and producing much of Eilish’s music.
Hollywood has also seen success among acting siblings such as Jake Gyllenhaal and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Jake earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Brokeback Mountain, while Maggie received one for Crazy Heart and later scored a screenplay nomination for The Lost Daughter.
Another famous pair is Joaquin Phoenix and his late brother River Phoenix. River was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Running on Empty, while Joaquin later won Best Actor for Joker after multiple nominations across his career.
Sibling success at the Oscars stretches back decades. Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine made history as the first sisters nominated for Best Actress in the same year at the 1942 ceremony, with Fontaine ultimately taking home the award for Suspicion.
Filmmaking families have also made their mark. Director siblings Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, widely known as the Coen Brothers, have shared numerous nominations and wins for films such as Fargo and No Country for Old Men.
Other notable Oscar-nominated siblings include Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck, Shirley MacLaine and Warren Beatty, Jane Fonda and Peter Fonda, as well as Julia Roberts and Eric Roberts.
The list also includes siblings from legendary acting families like the Barrymores and the Redgraves, along with creative collaborators like Sofia Coppola and Roman Coppola. While some worked together on projects, others earned recognition for entirely separate performances and films.
Though it’s uncommon for siblings to both receive Academy Award nominations, these families demonstrate how artistic talent can flourish across generations, and sometimes even within the same household.
