The team behind The Mummy 4 say the long awaited sequel would not be happening without a script strong enough to win over its original stars. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have revealed that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz only agreed to reprise their iconic roles after connecting deeply with the story.

Speaking while promoting Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the directing duo described the new film as beautiful, scary and sweeping in scope. They credited writer Dave Coggeshall with crafting a screenplay that captures the heart and character fans associate with Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. According to the filmmakers, Fraser and Weisz would not have signed on unless they truly loved what they read.

Fraser and Weisz first led 1999’s The Mummy and reunited for 2001’s The Mummy Returns. While Fraser continued with 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Weisz did not appear in the third instalment. Her return for the fourth film has reignited discussion among fans about continuity and canon, with the directors hinting that her involvement speaks for itself.

Fraser has previously shared that he had been waiting two decades for the right opportunity to revisit the franchise. Reflecting on the earlier sequels, he noted that timing and studio circumstances shaped those productions, but insisted the story he truly wanted to tell was still ahead. Now, with the project officially moving forward under Universal Pictures, he believes the moment has finally arrived to deliver what audiences have long hoped for.

The directing pair admitted they initially approached the prospect cautiously, aware that in Hollywood nothing is certain until contracts are signed. Still, once the pitch took shape, the possibility of bringing Fraser and Weisz back together became a reality. For fans of the original adventure films, the reunion signals a return to the chemistry and tone that defined the franchise’s early success.

The Mummy 4 is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on 19 May 2028. With its original leads back on board and a script described as emotionally rich and visually grand, expectations are already building for a revival that aims to honour the legacy while delivering a fresh cinematic spectacle.
