Ryan Coogler has cemented his legacy as one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers after his period drama Sinners won the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 32nd Annual Actor Awards. With this victory, Coogler became the first director to helm two ensemble winners, following his previous win for Black Panther in 2018, which also starred Michael B. Jordan.
Though Coogler did not join his cast on stage, his influence was felt as members of the ensemble, including Delroy Lindo, Miles Caton, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O’Connell, Michael B. Jordan, and Lola Kirke, accepted the award alongside casting director Francine Maisler. Lindo spoke for the group, describing their journey as “anointed” and praising Coogler’s vision for bringing the story to life. He said the cast “brought our hearts, our souls, we brought our spirits to this endeavor, and to be recognized by you all … thank you doesn’t come anywhere near encompassing what we feel.”
Sinners, a vampiric period drama, is already generating awards buzz with a record 16 Oscar nominations this month. It competed with fellow nominees including Warner Bros.’ One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, Hamnet, and Marty Supreme. The ensemble win marks another triumph for Michael B. Jordan, who continues to dominate the acting awards circuit following his Critics Choice and Golden Globe wins.
Past winners of the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast include celebrated films such as The Birdcage, Gosford Park, Chicago, Sideways, Little Miss Sunshine, Argo, Parasite, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Oppenheimer. Coogler’s achievement highlights not only his consistent ability to draw incredible performances from his actors but also his skill at crafting stories that resonate across generations.
The Actor Awards ceremony solidified Coogler’s position as a filmmaker capable of combining commercial success with critical acclaim. As Sinners continues its awards run, both fans and industry insiders are eager to see what the director will do next, with expectations high for the next chapter of storytelling from one of cinema’s most visionary talents.
