James Gunn puts ‘The Authority’ movie on hold as DCU plans shift focus

James Gunn confirms The Authority movie is paused, saying the script didn’t fit the wider DCU storyline plans

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has confirmed that the planned The Authority movie has been put on hold, citing issues with the script and its compatibility with the broader DC Universe (DCU) storyline.

Speaking in response to fan questions, Gunn explained that the screenplay “wasn’t quite there” and ultimately did not work within the larger narrative structure of the DCU. He added that both story and practical considerations played a role in the decision to pause development rather than move forward with production.

The Authority was first announced in 2023 as part of DC Studios’ initial slate of projects, based on the DC Comics team known for its darker and morally complex take on superhero storytelling. The comic series, created in 1992, features characters such as Midnighter, the Engineer, Swift, and Jack Hawksmoor, though no official casting had been confirmed for the film.

Gunn also emphasized that DC Studios maintains a strict development process, ensuring that no project enters production until its script meets creative expectations. He reiterated that this approach applies across the entire DCU slate.

Alongside the update on The Authority, Gunn confirmed that other announced projects, including Booster Gold and Paradise Lost, remain in active development, though timelines vary as scripts continue to evolve.

The DC Universe will next expand with the release of Supergirl on June 26, 2026, followed by Gunn’s upcoming sequel Man of Tomorrow, which is currently in production.
