KARACHI:

A government vehicle was stolen in a brazen incident in Federal B Area shortly after iftar on Friday, police said on Saturday.

According to police, a white government jeep (model 2000) parked outside a residence near Nauman Mosque in Block 16 of District Central was taken away by an unidentified suspect between 6.45pm and 7pm.

CCTV footage of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows a man clad in shalwar kameez and wearing a cap calmly walking into the street. The suspect is seen reaching the corner of the lane before turning back towards the vehicle. He then approaches the jeep, opens the door without haste, and gets inside.

Moments later, the vehicle can be heard starting — the sound clearly captured by the CCTV camera's microphone — after which the suspect drives off. Police said the footage suggests that a single suspect was involved in the theft.

Anwar Sher, SHO of Yousuf Plaza police station, confirmed that information regarding the theft was received through Madadgar 15, upon which a police team was dispatched to the scene. He said investigators are collecting CCTV footage from the crime scene and nearby locations to trace the suspect.

Police officials added that the incident occurred at a time when residents were engaged in breaking their fast and offering Maghrib prayers. Further investigation is under way.
