RAWALPINDI:

A "Nigehban Iftar Dastarkhwan" has been laid out at the gate of Liaquat Bagh, the site of the martyrdom of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Benazir Bhutto. The initiative has been organised under the auspices of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The area surrounding the dastarkhwan has been adorned with large and striking portraits of Benazir Bhutto and Maryam Nawaz. Iftar arrangements have been made for labourers, the underprivileged and those in need. On Friday, corresponding to the 9th of Ramazan, the Punjab government hosted its first iftar at the site of Benazir Bhutto's martyrdom.

The dastarkhwan has been set up under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Hassan Waqar Cheema, while the Assistant Commissioner (City) inspected the arrangements prior to iftar.

A considerable number of PPP workers also arrived at the site, initially assuming that the iftar had been arranged by the party for its supporters.

They were subsequently informed that the arrangements had been made by the district administration on behalf of the provincial government.

Numerous banners and images relating to the Chief Minister's "Nigehban Iftar Dastarkhwan" have been displayed at and around the martyrdom site. PPP supporters expressed their appreciation of the initiative.

PPP City Secretary-General Malik Asif Akbar said that while the party had not been consulted regarding the arrangement of the dastarkhwan at the martyrdom site, it nonetheless welcomed the gesture. He noted that the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-N are coalition partners in government, adding that their coming together at the iftar carried symbolic significance.
