Chappell Roan compares Hemlocke Springs album to RuneScape soundtrack

Chappell Roan has revealed she is a long-time RuneScape fan, praising the game’s original soundtrack and describing herself as a “video game girl” in a recent interview.
The singer made the comments while speaking to Nylon, where she compared Hemlocke Springs’ debut album to the music from RuneScape.
“Your album makes me feel like I’m listening… I don’t know if you ever played RuneScape, but it’s like… Do you know what I’m talking about?” she said, clarifying that she meant the early 2000s MMO with “video game sounds down” and “really medieval synth sh*t.” She added: “I’m a video game girl and I love synths and ’80s weird sh*t.”
Roan’s remarks refer to the original RuneScape soundtrack, largely composed by Ian Taylor, who created more than 500 tracks for the game. The music was shaped in part by early-2000s technical limitations, as browser-based games relied on MIDI files, meaning playback could vary depending on a user’s computer.
The official Old School RuneScape account responded on X after the interview circulated, writing: “thanks for the thinking of us @chappellroan, we love your music – if you or @hemlocksprings ever want the MIDI files let us know ❤️”.
Roan has previously spoken about her interest in gaming. In February 2026, she headlined Fortnite Festival Season 13 and received two in-game skins, following a 2025 BBC Radio 1 interview in which she publicly asked Epic Games for one.
She has also described herself as a Nintendo Switch player who enjoys The Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart and Fortnite.
