The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has ruled out awarding a central contract to fast-bowler Shoaib Akhtar due to doubts surrounding his fitness.

Akhtar, who played his first international match after more than a year, was omitted from the Test-bound squad for the England series after there were concerns regarding his fitness for the longer form of the game.

“The PCB is not yet considering offering him the central contract,” the PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar told The Express Tribune.

“We have no concrete reason to offer him a contract,” another official told The Express Tribune. “His fitness level is still a mystery. How can we offer him the contact after two matches - which he has played after more than a year?”

Meanwhile, there were reports that the PCB wanted Akhtar to sign a code of conduct before the team left for the England tour. But Sarwar said, “The signing of the code of conduct is a routine process for every player but due to some time constraints, we were unable to make him sign before the tour.”

Akhtar, who has been a category A player in the central contract, was not offered the contract this year after his fitness level was a concern. However, after an impressive performance in the Pentangular series, - a domestic one-day competition - Akhtar, 34, was drafted in the Pakistan team for the Asia Cup where he picked up four wickets in three matches but only bowled short spells.
