RAWALPINDI:

Following the deaths of a woman and her daughter who fell into a manhole in Lahore, the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has moved to enforce safety measures at construction sites in the city.

On the directives of RDA Director General Kinza Murtaza, strict safety measures have been declared mandatory at all construction sites in areas under the authority’s control. The RDA DG has ordered the installation of fencing, CCTV cameras, proper lighting, and safety signboards at construction sites across the city.

In line with the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman, RDA DG has issued comprehensive orders to ensure strict safety arrangements at all construction sites under RDA jurisdiction.

According to the directives, proper fencing around all construction sites is mandatory, while CCTV cameras must remain operational round the clock. Adequate lighting arrangements during night hours and the installation of clear and prominent safety signboards at every construction site have also been made compulsory.

In addition, all labourers have been directed to strictly follow prescribed safety rules. The RDA DG has instructed relevant directorates to carry out regular inspections and monitoring of construction sites, stressing that full compliance with safety measures must be ensured in all circumstances.

In case of violations, strict legal action will be taken without discrimination, including the sealing of construction sites and imposition of fines. She made it clear that the protection of public and workers’ lives and property is the government’s top priority and that any negligence or carelessness will not be tolerated.

The RDA DG directed officials to consider the implementation of these orders as their personal responsibility. The RDA will also ensure awareness regarding construction safety and effective coordination among departments in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
