Final Fantasy XI bug prompts Square Enix staff to manually defeat revived bosses across servers
Final Fantasy XI bug revived defeated bosses, leading Square Enix staff to step in and defeat them for players

Square Enix has intervened directly in Final Fantasy XI after a technical issue caused defeated bosses to reappear, forcing company staff to manually defeat them on behalf of players.
The issue, first reported by Automaton, affects Notorious Monsters, rare and powerful enemies that typically require coordinated groups to defeat.
According to a notice published on the official Final Fantasy XI website, a server-side error caused the game to lose records showing whether certain monsters had already been defeated. As a result, some bosses were able to respawn even after players had successfully killed them.
Square Enix later confirmed that data tracking the defeat status of these monsters had been unexpectedly cleared. With no reliable way to determine whether a Notorious Monster had been newly spawned or previously defeated, the system was unable to correctly calculate rewards linked to these encounters.
This posed a wider problem for the game’s progression systems. If monsters were incorrectly treated as undefeated, it could affect how rewards are distributed across individual servers, potentially disadvantaging players through no fault of their own.
To prevent this outcome, Square Enix announced that all affected Notorious Monsters would be treated as defeated across every world for the current period.
Rather than relying on automated processes, the company opted for an unusual solution. Official Game Masters were dispatched to manually defeat each affected monster.
Between January 29 and January 30, Square Enix staff are scheduled to visit every world and individually slay the revived Notorious Monsters.
Players who still wish to challenge these bosses for personal goals or data collection have been advised to do so before the Game Masters complete their work. Square Enix has stated that a fix has already been implemented to prevent the defeat data from being cleared again.
While the situation has disrupted normal gameplay, it has also resulted in a rare moment where players can observe Square Enix staff directly interacting with the live game environment to resolve the issue.
