Universal’s live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon is adding Icelandic actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson to its cast as the villain Drago, sources confirmed to Deadline.
Darri joins returning cast members Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn. Cate Blanchett has also been announced as a new addition.
Dean DeBlois will return as writer, director, and executive producer for the highly anticipated sequel. Marc Platt produces through Marc Platt Productions, alongside Adam Siegel, with Lexi Barta serving as Universal’s senior vice president of production. The film is scheduled for release on June 11, 2027.
The sequel continues to follow the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless, which have captivated audiences across four previous blockbuster films, grossing over $2.2 billion worldwide. While some actors reprise roles from the animated films, Ólafsson takes on the role of Drago, previously voiced by Djimon Hounsou.
Ólafsson is currently seen in Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, Severance Season 2, Somebody Somewhere Season 3, and La Palma. Upcoming projects include Apple TV+’s heist series 121212, A Winter’s Journey for Sony Pictures Classics, and Cary Fukunaga’s Blood on Snow. He also executive produces Reykjavík Fusion through his Icelandic production hub, ACT4.
On television, Darri has appeared in The Missing, Trapped, The Tourist, The Widow, NOS4A2, Quarry, True Detective, and Lady Dynamite. His film credits include Eurovision, Murder Mystery, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and The Meg.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is represented by Principal Entertainment and Conway Van Gelder Grant.
