JCP to hold three crucial meetings today

ISLAMABAD:

The constitutional body responsible for elevation of judges to higher judiciary is going to hold crucial meetings today to confirm the appointment of additional judges to two high courts as well as for formulation of rules for appointing judges to the newly formed Federal Constitutional Court (FCC).

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) will meet at the conference room of the Supreme Court's building under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, who is also the JCP chairman. The first meeting will take place at 1:30 pm, during which members will consider framing rules for the appointment of judges to the FCC.

The second meeting — scheduled to be held at 2:00 pm — will deliberate on the confirmation of three additional judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC). The judges under consideration include Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, Justice Muhammad Asif, and Justice Inaam Ameen Minhas.

The third meeting will be held at 2:30 pm, during which the JCP will consider the confirmation of two additional judges of the Balochistan High Court (BHC). The judges under review are Justice Muhammad Ayub Khan and Justice Najam Ud-Din Mengal.

The commission will discuss what should be the procedure for conducting interviews of candidates before appointing judges to the superior judiciary.
