Suspect hurt, held in police 'encounter'

A suspect was arrested in an injured condition while another escaped following an alleged police encounter involving crossfire in the New Town area on Sunday.

According to police, two suspects opened fire on a police team when officers attempted to stop them on suspicion. During the exchange, one suspect, identified as Yaseen Masoom, was wounded and apprehended, while his accomplice managed to flee.

Police officials said a motorcycle reported stolen a few days earlier, along with weapons, was recovered from the arrested suspect. He was wanted by police and had previously been involved in cases of robbery, motorcycle theft, causing injury and fraud. During the crossfire, a bullet struck Constable Masoor Abbas; however, he remained unharmed due to wearing a bulletproof jacket.

The injured suspect was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment. Senior police officers reached the scene upon receiving information about the incident, while raids are underway to arrest the absconding suspect.

Commending the police team for their bravery despite coming under fire, City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Khalid Hamdani praised the recovery of the stolen motorcycle and weapons, stating that those who attack citizens or the police would not escape the law.
