David Rosen, co-founder of Sega and a pioneering figure in the global arcade and video game industry, has died at the age of 95.

Rosen passed away on December 25, 2025, in Los Angeles and was surrounded by family at the time of his death. His passing was confirmed in early January by industry publication RePlay Magazine.

Born in New York, Rosen served in the U.S. Air Force before being stationed in Japan, a move that would shape the course of his career. During the 1950s, he founded Rosen Enterprises, a company focused on importing and operating coin-operated amusement machines in Japan. At the time, the country’s arcade industry was still in its early stages.

In 1965, Rosen Enterprises merged with Service Games, forming Sega Enterprises. Rosen assumed the roles of chairman and chief executive officer, helping guide the company through its formative years. Under his leadership, Sega released early arcade titles, including Periscope in 1966. The game became notable for its large cabinet design and is often credited with helping popularize arcade machines on a global scale.

Rosen later oversaw Sega’s expansion beyond Japan and played a significant role in establishing Sega of America. He also guided the company through multiple ownership changes during periods of growth and transition. Beyond Sega, Rosen served as the first chairman of the Japan Amusement Association, further influencing the development of Japan’s arcade industry.

Rosen retired from Sega in 1996. His contributions helped lay the groundwork for the modern video game business, leaving a lasting impact on both arcade entertainment and the broader gaming industry.
