French government defends Clooney citizenship over fairness concerns
France defends granting citizenship to George and Amal Clooney, citing cultural influence and international outreach

The French government has pushed back against criticism over granting French citizenship to George and Amal Clooney and their children.
Officials argue the family contributes to France’s global influence and cultural reach.
The controversy began after Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, a junior deputy to France’s interior minister, questioned the fairness of the process in a radio interview with Franceinfo. Vedrenne suggested that Clooney’s fame may have played a role in the decision and argued that it sent “the wrong message,” calling for a review of the naturalization procedure, according to Le Monde.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez quickly countered those claims, stating that the Clooneys were naturalized by decree following a formal decision by public authorities. Nuñez described the move as “a great chance for our country,” emphasizing that the process complied fully with French law.
France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also weighed in, stressing that a rigorous procedure was followed. Officials cited security checks, regulatory interviews at the prefecture level, and the payment of required tax stamps. The ministry pointed to France’s civic code, which allows citizenship for foreigners whose distinguished actions contribute to France’s international influence and economic prosperity.
George Clooney, who resides with his family in Brignoles in southern France, has spoken openly about embracing French culture. While promoting Netflix’s Jay Kelly, he joked that his French remains “horrible,” though he noted that Amal and their children speak fluently. Clooney has previously said he loves French culture despite struggling with the language.
The news also drew criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who mocked the actor on social media. Meanwhile, Clooney is already contributing to France’s entertainment industry, including a cameo in the upcoming Call My Agent! movie spinoff produced for Netflix.
