KARACHI:

Double-decker buses were introduced on the roads of the metropolitan city on Wednesday as part of an initiative that, the provincial government says, aims to provide modern, comfortable, and environmentally friendly public transportation for Karachiites.

The double-decker buses, launched by the Peoples Bus Service, will operate on the busy Sharae Faisal route, running from Malir to Fawara Chowk near Zainab Market in Saddar. These buses have a seating capacity of 120 passengers, with a designated section for women.

One of the unique features of these buses is their upper deck, which has an openable roof, allowing passengers to enjoy the pleasant weather while travelling. The buses are fully air-conditioned to provide relief from the scorching Karachi heat. The buses are also equipped with CCTV cameras and fire-fighting equipment to ensure the safety and security of the passengers.

The fare for the new service is reasonably priced, with a minimum charge of Rs80 and a maximum fare of Rs120. The much-awaited service was inaugurated today by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah. Sharjeel also announced that in 2026, the government plans to operate these buses on more routes throughout Karachi.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who welcomed the launch of the new double-decker buses, hailed the initiative as a significant step towards modernising urban mobility in Pakistan's financial hub.
