Jane Austen’s influence continues to be felt around the world, 250 years after she was born on December 16 1775. Caroline Jane Knight, the author’s fifth great-niece, has spoken about why Austen’s work still resonates with readers, scholars and fans today.

Knight grew up at Chawton House in Hampshire, the former home of Austen’s brother Edward, where the writer lived and worked.

She said Austen was a constant presence in her life, from sharing the same library and furniture to witnessing visitors from across the world travel to Chawton to celebrate the author’s legacy.

“I actually had a constant exposure to Jane Austen lovers, and I knew very early on not only how special Jane was as a family member,” Knight told PEOPLE.

In 2014, Knight founded the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation to honour that legacy. The charity focuses on improving literacy education in underserved communities globally and launched a North American branch in 2025.

“Within the Jane Austen community, and within anyone who's interested in women's literature, Jane Austen is much loved,” Knight said. “I think that we have an enormous opportunity to really expand our literacy impact.”

Knight said Austen’s relevance extends beyond her novels, citing the continued popularity of film and television adaptations such as the 1995 Pride and Prejudice. She added that the enduring appeal lies in Austen’s characters and their interactions.

“She draws characters that we all know, and therefore, that makes it timeless,” Knight said. “That's a humanity thing, that's not a time-stamped thing.”

Knight, who is also the author of Jane & Me: My Austen Heritage, said her favourite Austen novel has changed over time, noting that many readers grow to appreciate Persuasion more as they get older.

Looking ahead, Knight said she hopes to continue celebrating Austen’s impact through the work of her foundation.
