Meghan Markle’s documentary announcement drew criticism from royal sources over timing with King Charles’s cancer news

Meghan Markle has faced criticism from royal sources following the announcement of a new documentary produced by her company, Archewell Productions, which coincided with a public health update from King Charles.

Archewell Productions confirmed it is executive producing Cookie Queens, a documentary set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Directed by Alysa Nahmias, the film is described as a coming-of-age story centred on Girl Scout Cookie season and the experiences of young participants.

The announcement was made hours before King Charles shared positive news regarding his ongoing cancer treatment.

In a statement issued to Deadline, the Duchess of Sussex said, “As a former Girl Scout myself, with my mom as my troop leader, I have a personal affinity for this film and am proud that all our conversations and collaboration have led to Archewell Productions partnering with this award-winning team to executive produce this incredibly captivating documentary.”

However, royal sources quoted by RadarOnline criticised the timing of the announcement. One source described it as “utterly self-serving,” adding that while the project itself was not an issue, the timing “inevitably steals attention from a significant and hopeful moment for the king.”

Another source said the move felt “super-cynical and tone deaf,” suggesting it diverted focus from King Charles’ health update, which had been widely anticipated by global media.

In a pre-recorded message for Stand Up to Cancer, King Charles said, “Today I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to ‘doctors’ orders,’ my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year.” He added that the milestone was both a personal relief and an example of advances in cancer care.

The discussion comes amid reports of ongoing strain within the royal family. The Times recently cited sources claiming Prince Harry’s relationship with his father remains difficult, despite suggestions from others that communication has improved.

Separate reports also note that Meghan Markle recently contacted her estranged father following serious health issues.
