Why Sylvester Stallone won’t be in the Cliffhanger reboot
Veteran actor will not return in Cliffhanger due to contractual and scheduling conflicts

Hollywood action legend Sylvester Stallone will not be starring in the reboot of the 1993 action hit Cliffhanger, despite originally being attached to the project. Producers report that financial and scheduling issues ultimately prevented Stallone from committing to the role he was expected to play.
Producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe spent years developing the Cliffhanger reboot with Stallone in mind as the male lead. However, a key condition remained unresolved: a guaranteed fee for Stallone. His participation was contingent on this payment being secured before filming began, which never materialised.
While Stallone was reportedly prepared to shoot his part during a break from his television series Tulsa King, the financiers failed to provide the guaranteed payment structure required by his team. As a result, Stallone never signed a binding agreement to star in the project.
This financial dispute led to major changes behind the scenes. The original director associated with Stallone’s version left the project, and producers subsequently hired a new director and recast the lead roles. Actors such as Lily James and Pierce Brosnan now headline the reboot, which is moving forward with a different creative team.
Fans have also noticed Stallone’s comparatively limited roles in recent franchise films like Expendables 4, where his character appears less prominently than in earlier installments. Some collaborators, including co-star Jason Statham, have noted that Stallone’s reduced screen time affected the dynamic on set as the franchise evolves toward new leading characters.
Industry observers say the Cliffhanger situation illustrates broader trends in Hollywood, where veteran stars sometimes step back from major roles due to scheduling, compensation negotiations, or creative direction.
Stallone continues to work on projects like Tulsa King, but this particular reboot will proceed without him, marking a notable shift for a film originally conceived with one of action cinema’s most recognisable faces.
