Selena Gomez has addressed a comment about her appearance after sharing a makeup-free video on social media, using the moment to speak openly about her skin and encourage followers to prioritise sun protection.

In an Instagram Story post shared on Tuesday, the actress and singer reacted to a remark about her grooming, saying someone had asked her, “how do you shave your moustache.” Gomez clarified that the shadow visible on her upper lip was not facial hair but melasma, a common skin condition. “It’s my melasma,” she said. “I take care of it and treat it, but yeah it’s there.”

Gomez, acknowledged the comment without defensiveness, adding, “I totally get it.” She went on to explain that the condition is linked to sun exposure, saying, “It’s from the sun,” while encouraging viewers to wear sunscreen as part of their daily routine.

Melasma can cause brown or greyish patches on the skin, often appearing on the face, including the upper lip. It is commonly associated with sun exposure, hormonal changes and heat. Gomez has previously spoken about managing her skin carefully, particularly due to her lupus diagnosis, which makes sun protection especially important.

Despite ongoing public scrutiny, Gomez has spoken about developing ways to cope with criticism. Reflecting on self-care, she previously said, “Some days you just have to let yourself get it out, and then afterwards, a good laugh.”
