Two new Tomb Raider titles have been announced, marking Lara Croft’s return to the series for the first time since 2018.

Revealed at The Game Awards in Los Angeles, both projects will be published by Amazon and introduce different interpretations of the long-running action-adventure franchise.

Tomb Raider Catalyst will feature what game director Will Kerslake described as the “charismatic, self-assured, formidable Lara Croft” associated with the original 1990s games.

The narrative is set in northern India, across markets, mountains and ancient structures, with Lara competing against other treasure hunters in the search for artefacts with potentially catastrophic implications.

The title is currently in development at Crystal Dynamics, the California-based studio responsible for the franchise since 2003, and is scheduled for release in 2027. Crystal Dynamics previously developed Tomb Raider Legend, Anniversary, Underworld and the reboot trilogy depicting a younger version of the character.

The second project, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, is slated for 2026 and is being produced in collaboration with Flying Wild Hog in Poland.

The game is positioned as an expanded reimagining of the original 1996 release, integrating redesigned puzzles, modernised combat and technology made possible through Unreal Engine 5.

According to Kerslake, the ambition is to respect the spirit of Core Design’s classic title while updating the experience for contemporary audiences and expanding gameplay elements that were not achievable at the time of the original launch.

Both forthcoming titles will feature British actor Alix Wilton Regan as Lara Croft. Regan has previously appeared in Dragon Age: Inquisition and Cyberpunk 2077 and had been set to portray Joanna Dark in the cancelled remake of Perfect Dark.

The Tomb Raider franchise remains widely recognised, with Amazon also developing a television series written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and set to star Sophie Turner as Croft.
