ISLAMABAD:

The Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), in collaboration with the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), Green Tourism Pvt Ltd, the Prime Minister's Youth Programme and Brain Design, successfully organised an Eco Hike at Margalla Trail 5 to commemorate the International Mountain Day 2025, alongside nationwide sporting and awareness activities promoting mountain conservation and responsible outdoor pursuits.

The event brought together the youth, environmentalists, academicians, government representatives and outdoor enthusiasts to raise public awareness about the importance of mountain ecosystems and glacier preservation.

Observed under the United Nations theme "Glaciers matter for water, food and livelihoods in mountains and beyond," speakers at the event emphasised Pakistan's responsibility as one of the world's most glacier-rich countries. Pakistan's northern mountain ranges host some of the largest glacial systems outside the polar regions, playing a critical role in sustaining national river systems, agriculture, climate stability, and mountain communities.

Renowned mountaineers Sajid Ali Sadpara and Ashraf Ali Sadpara joined the Eco Hike, inspiring participants through their experiences and highlighting responsible trekking practices and Pakistan's internationally recognized mountaineering heritage.

Advisor to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, Syeda Amnah Batool, attended as Chief Guest and underscored the urgency of protecting glaciers amid accelerating climate change. She commended ACP and PTDC for mobilizing youth and promoting responsible tourism, emphasising that glacier conservation is essential to Pakistan's long-term water security and food sustainability.

APC President Major General Irfan Arshad Khan, HI(M), appreciated the strong public participation and reaffirmed ACP's commitment to promoting eco-friendly mountaineering and sustained environmental awareness initiatives.

PTDC Managing Director Aftab ur Rehman Rana attended as Guest of Honour and highlighted PTDC's efforts to strengthen sustainable tourism. He emphasised that Pakistan's mountains form the foundation of the country's tourism identity and that initiatives such as the Eco Hike support responsible and nature-friendly tourism practices.

Focal Person to the Chairman, PMYP for Youth Mobilisation and Engagement and former Deputy Mayor encouraged young participants to serve as ambassadors of environmental protection and active contributors toward building a climate-resilient Pakistan.
