Actor Vin Diesel is set to take on an expanded role in the upcoming Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie, serving as writer, producer, and star.

The project, produced through Diesel’s One Race Films in partnership with Mattel Studios, aims to bring the classic tabletop toy to a modern audience. Diesel’s involvement was first reported in early 2021, and the latest update marks a significant increase in his creative influence on the film.

Diesel’s One Race Films co-producer, Samantha Vincent, will oversee production alongside Darian Greenbaum and Andrew Scannell of Mattel Studios. In a statement, Diesel said he hopes the film will explore “the role of competition in a world often measured by strength and dominance” while highlighting “the power of compassion at its core.”

Mattel Studios President Robbie Brenner praised Diesel, calling him “a powerhouse storyteller with an unmatched understanding of action, heart, and world-building” and described his vision for the project as “bold, human, and deeply cinematic.”

Despite Diesel’s involvement, the project faces questions about its potential success. He has limited experience as a screenwriter and director, with his most notable credits including the 1997 film Strays and the Fast & Furious short film Los Bandoleros. Industry observers have noted similarities to the 2011 film Real Steel, which featured robot boxing and family drama, potentially creating a high benchmark for the new adaptation.

The Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie will attempt to revive a nostalgic property from Diesel’s childhood while appealing to a contemporary audience. With Diesel writing, producing, and starring, Mattel Studios hopes to create a cinematic experience that blends action, heart, and nostalgia. The release date has not yet been announced.
