Ship-breakers strike to improve working conditions

Fifteen thousand ship-breakers in Gadani went on strike today, demanding better working conditions.

Fifteen thousand ship-breakers in Gadani went on strike today, demanding better working conditions.

The workers protested against sub-standard daily wages, poor working conditions, long hours and the lack of social security.

General Secretary of the Gadani Ship breakers Democratic Union was arrested ahead of the strike. However, he has now been released.

Ship breaking companies have shut down as a result of the strike which is to last indefinitely.

Over the past year, 17 workers have died while on the job.
