LOS ANGELES:

Universal's 'Wicked: For Good' has turned the North American box office into a cauldron of excitement, opening to a record $150 million in the US and Canada.

With global ticket sales reaching $226 million, the musical adaptation of the long-running Broadway hit has not only shattered records for stage-to-screen adaptations but also revived a nine-week slump in domestic cinema revenue.

The film continues the story of Elphaba, the green-skinned outcast known as the Wicked Witch of the West, played by Tony Award-winner Cynthia Erivo, and Ariana Grande as the sparkling Glinda.

Together, they confront the nefarious machinations of the Wizard, played by Jeff Goldblum, and Madame Morrible, portrayed by Michelle Yeoh.

Director Jon Chu's vision, coupled with inspired casting and an aggressive marketing campaign, has helped transform a risky two-film adaptation into a resounding success.

Audiences responded with enthusiasm, awarding the film an A grade on CinemaScore and a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, even as critics offered mixed reactions.

Comscore analysts say 'Wicked' resonates particularly with younger viewers, echoing the cultural impact of classics such as 'The Sound of Music'. Universal executives noted that the film's appeal to families in cities like Salt Lake City signals broad, multi-generational interest.

In its North American debut, the film outperformed competitors including 'Now You See Me: Now You Don't' ($9.1 million), 'Predator: Badlands' ($6.3 million), and 'The Running Man' ($5.8 million). Overseas, the musical earned an additional $76 million across 78 markets, underscoring its global appeal.

As a blend of fantasy, music, and spectacle, 'Wicked: For Good' proves that stage magic can translate into cinematic gold, enchanting fans old and new while solidifying its place among the most successful musical adaptations of all time.
