WB invites Punjab to global carbon market

Promises support for environmental initiatives

LAHORE:

The World Bank has extended an invitation to the Punjab government to participate in the global carbon market and expressed its readiness to assist in projects related to environmental improvement.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif met WB Climate Change Group Global Director Valerie Hickey during the COP30 Conference in Belem, Brazil.

The WB official accepted an invitation from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to visit Punjab.

According to a statement, the meeting focused on collaboration and policy discussions related to environmental sustainability and climate resilience in Punjab. Valerie Hickey was quoted as describing the CM as a "climate change warrior and leader". She appreciated the Punjab government's ongoing initiatives for environmental improvement and offered complete support on behalf of the World Bank in this regard.

The WB invited the Punjab government to participate in the global carbon market and expressed its readiness to assist in projects related to Clean Punjab, Air Quality Index (AQI), transport, forestry and wildlife conservation.

The WB official said Punjab's environmental programmes reflect global leadership and commitment to sustainability.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz reiterated her commitment to making Punjab a model of environmental excellence not just in the region but across the globe.
