Pindi schools lead in rainwater recycling
The Education Department has successfully completed a project to harvest and recycle rainwater for reuse in 18 high and higher secondary schools across the Rawalpindi district. In the next phase, the initiative will be expanded to an additional 100 schools.
The project was executed with the financial and technical assistance of the international social welfare organisation SheherSaaz, which operates in the fields of education and social development. The system was formally inaugurated during a special ceremony held under the 'Progressive Schools Project' programme.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the District Education Authority (DEA) Rawalpindi, Tariq Mahmood, and representatives of SheherSaaz jointly performed the inauguration.
SheherSaaz is a welfare organisation committed to improving various sectors of society. Its core objectives are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly quality education, clean water and sanitation, and climate action.
As part of the Progressive Schools Project, SheherSaaz has successfully installed rainwater harvesting and recycling systems in 18 high and higher secondary schools in Rawalpindi, enabling the sustainable reuse of rainwater.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the maintenance of these systems was also signed, in a ceremony attended by DEA CEO Tariq Mahmood, Deputy Commissioner Dr Hasan Waqar Cheema, and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) Abdullah Khan.
Speaking at the event, CEO Tariq Mahmood praised SheherSaaz's initiative, describing it as a commendable contribution to water conservation and the efficient use of natural resources. He added that the project's scope would gradually be extended to include other government departments, residential areas, and private properties, ensuring that not a single drop of rainwater is wasted.
In her remarks, SheherSaaz CEO Almas Shakoor said: "Today is a day of pride and happiness for us as we celebrate SheherSaaz's 29th anniversary. We are proud to be working towards a better and more sustainable future for the generations to come."
The ceremony concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony to mark SheherSaaz's 29th anniversary. The rainwater recycling systems have been installed in major schools located along Murree Road, Satellite Town, Pandora, Naya Mohallah, Hazara Colony, and other key areas of the city.
