Federal Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar has said stern action will be taken against those CEOs of power distribution companies (DISCOs) who fail to recover dues from running defaulters within 60 days.

Presiding over a meeting of DISCOs here on Wednesday, he asked them to start an effective campaign to recover dues from defaulters. He said a quick recovery process would help enhance fuel supply to power units, causing an increase in power generation.

The minister said action would also be taken against other senior officials if they failed to recover electricity dues from running defaulters within 30 days. He asked the CEOs to give their field officers specific targets to ensure the quick recovery of dues.

He said the performance of field officers would then be assessed on the basis of recovery they would make in three months. He also asked the CEOs to take action against power theft and reduce line losses.

He said DISCOs should disconnect power supply to consumers in case of non-payment of bills after 60 days. The minister said there should be no complaints from consumers of inflated bills, adding that officials involved in any wrongdoing would be taken to task.

He asked the CEOs to address the complaints of low voltage and short-circuit on an urgent basis. “The field staff should be asked to adopt a friendly attitude towards consumers,” he said.

He said the government planned to appoint CEOs of DISCOs from the private sector to improve their efficiency.

Earlier, the minister was briefed on the dues’ recovery status, line losses and upgrading of the electricity system.
