A widespread Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage on Monday left many users literally tossing and turning after disrupting operations for Eight Sleep’s smart “Pod” beds.

The high-tech mattresses, which use internet connectivity to control temperature, elevation, and sleep settings, malfunctioned overnight—leaving some stuck upright and others overheating.

Eight Sleep’s “Pod 5” bed, a premium model priced at over $2,000, relies heavily on cloud connectivity for its smart functions. During the AWS outage, many users were unable to adjust or disable the automated features through the app. “Would be great if my bed wasn’t stuck in an inclined position due to an AWS outage. C’mon now,” one frustrated customer posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Matteo Franceschetti, CEO of Eight Sleep, quickly issued an apology on social media, acknowledging the issue. “The AWS outage has impacted some of our users since last night, disrupting their sleep. That is not the experience we want to provide, and I want to apologize for it,” he wrote.

By 6 p.m. ET, AWS confirmed that services had been restored, and Eight Sleep systems were once again operational. However, the incident sparked broader criticism of over-reliance on internet-connected sleep technology.

Many customers have since urged Eight Sleep to introduce an offline control feature, allowing manual adjustments when cloud-based systems fail. The event highlights growing concerns about the vulnerability of smart home devices—and the potential consequences when a server crash turns bedtime into a tech nightmare.
