James Gunn has confirmed what many comic fans already suspected: the hunt for the next Batman is turning into one of Hollywood’s most competitive casting battles. In a recent interview with IGN, the DC Studios boss revealed that numerous A-list stars have approached him directly about taking on the Caped Crusader in Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

“I can’t tell you the amount of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman,” Gunn said, noting that it has become harder to find stars who don’t want the role. “He’s the one character everyone wants to play. That’s the truth.”

The film, directed by Andy Muschietti (The Flash), will be a fresh take on the Dark Knight, inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic series. Unlike past reboots, The Brave and the Bold introduces Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s biological son, who becomes the new Robin. Gunn also hinted that details surrounding Batman’s origin and parentage are still “in flux,” suggesting creative liberties will be taken to keep the story fresh.

The Batman mantle has a storied cinematic history. Christian Bale redefined the character with Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy, while Robert Pattinson took over in Matt Reeves’ The Batman in 2022. Pattinson is set to return for The Batman: Part II, scheduled for release in October 2027, which will exist separately from Gunn’s DC Universe timeline.

With Gunn at the helm, anticipation is mounting. His comments fuel speculation about who might don the cape and cowl, especially since the director has a reputation for bold and unconventional casting choices. Fans are already buzzing with theories online, ranging from established action stars to unexpected left-field names who could bring a new dimension to Gotham’s most famous vigilante.

For now, Gunn is keeping quiet on specifics, but his remarks confirm one thing: the competition to play Batman has never been fiercer. The question isn’t whether Hollywood wants to be Batman, it’s who will ultimately win the role.
