The Punjab archaeology department has launched a plan for the conservation and development of the historic Bhera Walled City. The initiative includes the preservation of ancient walls, restoration of gateways, improvement of the urban fabric, and provision of visitor-friendly facilities while ensuring that the cultural identity and authenticity of Bhera remain intact.
According to a statement, the scheme reflects the vision Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif of linking heritage conservation with cultural pride and tourism-led development.
A former official of the department, Muhammad Hassan, stated that Bhera is among the oldest settlements of the subcontinent, and its conservation means reviving the living culture that once flourished within its walls.
Another former director of archeology, Malik Maqsood, added that the restoration of gateways, mosques, and residential clusters would not only safeguard heritage but also benefit the community through sustainable tourism.
