KARACHI:

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday described the defence agreement with Saudi Arabia as a positive step for Pakistan, saying every Pakistani wished to protect Makkah and Madina.

Talking to the media after visiting the Greater Sewerage Plant in Karachi, Bilawal said there was ongoing coordination between provincial and federal governments. He noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had made commitments regarding Karachi, which would be implemented.

The PPP chairman said the Pakistan Saudi Arabia defence accord, which was signed on Wednesday, was beneficial for both countries. "The agreement reached with Saudi Arabia is positive for Pakistan. Every Pakistani wants to defend Makkah and Madina," he said.

When asked about the Indian cricket team's behaviour in an Asia Cup match against Pakistan last Sunday, Bilawal criticised India for dragging politics into cricket. He further said that Pakistan had recently defeated India in war.

Commenting on speculation over political changes in Sindh, he remarked that such reports were generated by the media itself. "You run the stories and then ask me the questions," he told journalists.

Bilawal also referred to President Asif Ali Zardari's recent visit to China, saying the president represented the entire country and had been warmly received there. He said development issues including Sindh's solid waste management had been discussed during the visit.

On the ongoing floods, Bilawal said politics should not be played over natural disasters. "When calamities strike, appeals are made to the world. The United Nations must be approached, but the federal government has yet to appeal to the UN," he said.

He cautioned that flood-related health problems were still emerging and stressed that the prime minister should seek international assistance. He urged that victims be supported through the BISP.
