Rockstar Games has described Grand Theft Auto 6 as “the largest game launch in history” ahead of its scheduled release on May 26 2026.
The statement appeared in a job listing on Rockstar’s official website, where the company sought a lead software engineer to oversee the game’s data platform.
According to the listing, the successful candidate would work with “some of the most talented people in the industry” to ensure the platform scales to support “millions of players worldwide.”
The reference to GTA 6 as the largest launch in history has since been removed from the job advert, though archived versions confirm it was included.
Rockstar has not clarified whether it expects GTA 6 to break records in terms of player numbers, revenue, or both. Analyst firm Ampere previously estimated the game’s launch could generate as much as $2.7 billion for the industry.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will be the first new entry in the series in more than a decade, following the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The latest trailer showcased dual protagonists Jason and Lucia, giving players their first detailed look at the upcoming title.
While the campaign has been highlighted, Rockstar has yet to provide details on the future of Grand Theft Auto Online, which has been central to the franchise’s ongoing popularity. Whether a new version of GTA Online will launch alongside the single-player campaign remains unconfirmed.
Take-Two Interactive chief executive Strauss Zelnick has said Rockstar generally delivers on release dates once they are set, suggesting the May 2026 launch is likely to hold.
