LAHORE:

Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has called for the construction of dams to prevent future flood disasters, as monsoon inundations continue to displace communities across the province.

Speaking at Governor House, he said the recent flooding had affected millions of people, sweeping away homes, livestock and crops.

He attributed much of the damage to the release of water from India, which left thousands of villages under water.

"The Pakistan Peoples Party stands with the flood victims in this difficult time," Khan said and added that the party, under the direction of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has mobilised relief efforts, including food distribution and medical support through Red Crescent camps.

The party chairman had visited several flood-hit areas in recent days, where he met displaced families and expressed sorrow over the scale of devastation.

The governor urged party members to assist residents in need and stressed that political rivalries should be set aside during the crisis. He also said the PPP would push the government to waive electricity bills for affected households.

Khan emphasised the need for a long-term strategy to manage water resources. "Dams are the need of the hour," he said.
