Kate McKinnon has candidly revealed that she’s been diagnosed with geographic tongue, a harmless, but visually striking, oral condition characterized by map-like patches on the tongue’s surface.

During a recent interview with People, the Saturday Night Live alum described the diagnosis as “gross,” admitting she photographed her own tongue and shared it with another actor friend who also has the condition.

“We brag about how geographic we are on any given day,” she quipped.

Geographic tongue results from areas where tiny sensory bumps, called papillae, are missing—creating smooth, red patches with slightly raised borders.

Although typically harmless, the condition can cause sensitivity to spicy, salty, or sugary foods. However, treatment is usually unnecessary unless symptoms persist or worsen.

McKinnon was in the spotlight not only for her health reveal but also for her current projects: she stars in the dark comedy The Roses alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, and she’ll soon release her second children’s book, Secrets of the Purple Pearl, in her Millicent Quibb series.
