Michael Caine is preparing to return to acting at the age of 92, joining Vin Diesel in The Last Witch Hunter 2, now in development at Lionsgate.

The screen legend, who announced his retirement in 2023, is expected to reprise his role as Dolan, a priest who assists Diesel’s immortal warrior Kaulder. While his deal has not yet been finalised, sources confirm he is attached to the sequel.

The original Last Witch Hunter, released in 2015, was promoted by Diesel as inspired by his own Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. Despite a modest $27 million domestic gross, it earned $119 million internationally and went on to find a larger audience in digital markets.

Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement: “The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favourite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world.”

Caine last appeared in Oliver Parker’s The Great Escaper, where he played a World War II veteran. At the time, he told BBC Radio 4’s Today show: “The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought, ‘Well, I might as well leave with all this — I’ve got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?’”
