Grand Theft Auto 6 has been described as gaming’s first ever ‘AAAAA’ release, with the title scheduled to launch on May 26 2026, following a brief delay.
The game was initially expected to close out 2025, but Rockstar Games announced earlier this year that more development time was needed.
Despite the postponement, anticipation remains high, with fans continuing to dissect trailers and screenshots for details on the new instalment in the long-running franchise.
The scale of GTA 6 has prompted comments from across the industry. Devolver Digital co-founder Nigel Lowrie suggested the game could surpass established classifications.
Speaking to IGN, he said: “I mean, there are AAA games and then there’s AAAA games and I’d argue that Grand Theft Auto is potentially the AAAAA game; it’s just bigger than anything else both in the scope and scale of the game and the kind of cultural impact that it has and the attention it demands.”
The AAA designation has long been used to describe blockbuster releases, with franchises such as Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, Halo, Fallout, and earlier Grand Theft Auto entries all fitting the description.
Ubisoft has previously applied the term “AAAA” to projects such as Beyond Good and Evil 2 and Skull and Bones, though the label has not gained wider adoption.
Lowrie’s remarks highlight the level of expectation surrounding GTA 6, which is already shaping up to be one of the most significant releases in gaming history.
With its May 2026 date now confirmed, players and rival publishers alike are preparing for the impact of what could be Rockstar’s most ambitious project to date.
