NDMA issues 48-hour flood alert across Punjab

Monsoon systems from Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea to trigger heavy rain, raising flood, landslide risk in Punjab

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a 48-hour weather alert, warning of torrential monsoon rains piling pressure on river basins across Pakistan.

Moisture-driven systems originating from both the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea are expected to trigger severe rainfall, especially over the upper and central regions of Punjab, elevating the risk of urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides.

The Ravi River watershed faces the most immediate threat, with reports indicating a high likelihood of urban inundation and river overflow.

Already at Jassar, the Ravi is surging to an exceptionally high flood level, discharging 202,020 cusecs. Meanwhile, Shahdara and Head Baloki remain at medium flood levels, raising concerns for nearby communities.

Areas under close monitoring include Narowal, Shahdara, and Lahore’s northern suburbs, with vulnerable union councils like Kot Mahbo, Aziz Colony, Qaiser Town, and Faisal Park in the spotlight.

In Sheikhupura’s Ferozewala tehsil, the likes of Faizpur Khu, Burj Attari, and Kot Abdul Malik are at heightened risk, while Ganesh Pur in Nankana Sahib remains vulnerable. Kasur’s Pattoki tehsil—including Phool Nagar and Kot Sardar—as well as Khanewal’s flood-prone villages such as Ghauspur and Abdul Hakim, are also being closely watched.

Authorities have urged residents in these areas to prepare emergency kits with essentials like drinking water, dry food, medicines, and torches while local administrations have also been told to activate contingency plans and beef up safety measures.
