After reinventing The Karate Kid with their hit Netflix series Cobra Kai, creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are now turning their attention to another 80s classic: Knight Rider. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trio are in early talks to write the script, with Hurwitz and Schlossberg also being considered to direct. Alongside them, The Fall Guy producers Kelly McCormick and David Leitch will be attached through their 87North banner, ensuring heavyweight backing for the revival.

The original Knight Rider aired from 1982 to 1986 and starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a crimefighter whose most iconic partner wasn’t human but a sleek, artificially intelligent Pontiac Trans Am named KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand). The concept became a defining piece of 80s pop culture, and the talking car remains one of television’s most memorable creations.

This won’t be the first attempt to bring Knight Rider back to life on the big screen. Previous iterations of a film were floated in Hollywood, including a script from Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, but none made it past the development stage. The Cobra Kai team’s involvement signals a fresh attempt, and given their success in reviving The Karate Kid franchise for a new generation, anticipation is high that they may finally crack the formula.

So far, plot details are being kept under wraps, leaving fans speculating whether the new film will lean on nostalgia or reimagine the premise for modern audiences. With Cobra Kai concluding its sixth and final season earlier this year and Karate Kid: Legends arriving in cinemas, the creators are clearly looking ahead to their next big project.

For now, there is no release date attached to Knight Rider, but excitement is already building for the return of Michael Knight and KITT on the big screen.
