
Punjab Agriculture Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo has emphasised that the revival of cotton is a national responsibility and the crop has been cultivated over 3.2 million acres this year with a production target of 5.5 million bales.
Chairing a review meeting at the MNS Agricultural University, Multan, the secretary stressed the need for accelerating field activities to achieve the target, noting that over 0.9 million bales had already been harvested. He directed cotton inspectors to maintain accurate records of crop arrivals at ginning factories.
The agricultural secretary shared that the overall condition of the crop was satisfactory as no major pest or disease outbreak had been reported so far. He announced that a survey of high-performing cotton varieties would be conducted to guide farmers about future cultivation of the crop.
Earlier, the secretary reviewed arrangements at the Model Agri Mall Multan and stated that all four Agri Malls would be fully operational by the end of September.
The meeting was attended by Special Agriculture Secretary for South Punjab Sarfraz Hussain Magsi, MNS Agricultural University Multan Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Zulfiqar Ali, National Seed Regulatory Authority Chairman Dr Asif Ali, Additional Secretary of Punjab Task Force Shabbir Ahmed Khan and Director Generals of Agriculture Department including Chaudhry Abdul Hameed, Naveed Asmat Kahloon, Dr Amir Rasool, Dr Sajidur Rehman and Dr Abdul Qayyum.
