PESHAWAR:

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has traced a cryptocurrency trail used in terror financing, marking a significant breakthrough in multiple high-profile terrorism investigations. Officials say the digital money route was unearthed while probing recent attacks, enabling the department to secure crucial evidence against militant networks.

The revelations come as CTD steps up its operational capacity with specialised units, enhanced facilities, and advanced training programs, upgrades credited with helping solve some of the province's most pressing pending cases.

Among its recent successes, the CTD cracked the assassination case of Mufti Munir Shakir in an IED blast, dismantled a network responsible for 18 terrorist attacks in Peshawar, including the killing of DSP Sardar Hussain Khan and 14 other police personnel, seized large caches of arms, ammunition, and IEDs, identified gangs targeting religious scholars, and eliminated the Daesh Khurasan network behind the May 11 suicide attack in Peshawar.

Additional Inspector General CTD Shoukat Abbas told The Express Tribune that the department had "achieved major goals in the last two years" and is now focusing on advanced investigative techniques, technical support, intelligence-led operations, and ensuring convictions. New initiatives include the creation of anti-cybercrime and madaris monitoring cells, as well as the procurement of anti-drone technology for both the newly merged districts and settled areas.

Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed said that militant groups operating illegal checkpoints on highways have been "completely eradicated" following extensive CTD operations in the province's southern region, leaving "no strongholds remaining anywhere in K-P."

Authorities believe the exposure of the cryptocurrency financing route could help choke off critical funding channels for militant outfits, marking what they call a "decisive step" in the fight against terrorism in the province.
