SUKKUR: Classes have begun at Technical Training College, the first diploma-awarding institution in the city of Daharki.

The college was set up by the Pakistan Chemical and Energy Sector Skills Development Company with Engro, Mari Gas Company Limited and the Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation. The Sindh Technical Educational Vocational Training Authority plans to add a wing for vocational training.

Daharki is an industrial hub, with the Engro factory and gas field of Mari Gas Company, but it lacked institutions for training the local community to cater to the needs of these industries. Now the residents will be able to obtain three-year diplomas in chemical and mechanical skills.

Brigadier (retd) Raja Muhammad Ali, the chief of the skills development company, said that the college will benefit the local population at different levels. It is affiliated with the City and Guilds International.

Admissions began in August. Students with a minimum of a B grade in Matric were eligible to appear in the entrance test. The management plans to add electrical, instrumentation, computers and electronic technologies courses.
