Jessica Simpson returned to live performance on the Today Show, addressing an earpiece malfunction during her comeback. The multi-platinum artist performed in Rockefeller Center on July 23, showcasing songs from her album Nashville Canyon, released in March.

“It’s insane because I’ve had a malfunction here and everywhere – but it’s OK,” Simpson said during a post-show interview, pointing to her earpiece. She also joked, “I think my boobs stayed in, so that’s good!”

Simpson performed new songs including “Use My Heart Against Me” and “Blame Me”, and revisited her 2005 cover of “These Boots Are Made For Walking”. The performance marked her return with new music following her 2009 album Happy Christmas.

Speaking on the Today Show, Simpson shared that she created her new music after her world was “flipped upside down”.

In January, she announced her separation from husband Eric Johnson after nearly ten years of marriage. The couple share three children, Maxwell “Maxi” Drew, Ace Knute and Birdie Mae, who attended her performance.

“They know me singing Christmas songs, but they have never seen me on the stage,” Simpson explained. “So I was like, ‘Let me get New York out of the way and then y’all can come.’”

Simpson described her children as her “biggest supporters” as she returned to using her voice in a “whole different way”.

The Today Show performance marked a significant moment in Simpson’s return to live music, highlighting a new chapter in her career.
